First year at UM

Jim Herlihy enters his first full year as the Director of Athletics at the University of Montevallo. He was named to the position by UM President Philip Williams in December of 2007. Herlihy is responsible for leading an athletic program which currently sponsors 10 sports with over 160 student-athletes and a staff of 25. He becomes the seventh athletic director in Montevallo athletic history.

Herlihy came to UM from Florida Gulf Coast University, where he had served as Assistant Athletic Director for Business and External Relations. At FGCU he had oversight responsibilities for budgets and business operations, marketing and promotions, sports information, athletic facilities, and served as the sport administrator for men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s soccer. During his three and one half-year tenure, FGCU transitioned into full membership into NCAA Division II and began the reclassification process into Division I.

Herlihy spent over a decade in major league baseball with both the Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers organizations. He served in marketing and management roles with Philadelphia, including serving as the General Manager of Florida Operations and 7,500-seat Jack Russell Stadium as well as General Manager of the Clearwater Phillies franchise in the Florida State League. Herlihy served three years as the Director of Florida Operations for Texas, overseeing an 82-acre complex that featured 5 ½ fields, including a 5,300-seat stadium, and over 80 employees for major league spring training, minor league spring training, minor league business operations, two minor league affiliates and fall instructional league. He also served a stint on the Board of Directors for the Florida State League.

He has also served as the assistant general manager with the Nashville Sounds minor league baseball franchise and as the inaugural executive director of the Turner Civic Center complex in Southwest Florida. Prior to his baseball career, he served as the Sports Information Director at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine and as an assistant SID at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire.

Herlihy graduated from Plymouth State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1988. He is completing his Master of Arts degree in Public Administration.

Herlihy and his wife Peggy have two children; Elizabeth and TJ.
