Falcons Earn AVCA Team Academic Award for 2008-09

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team under the direction of head coach Katie O’Brien was awarded the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2008-09 season. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

The Falcons are one of just 46 Division II schools to be given the distinguished honor. UM joins two schools from the Gulf South Conference as well as two schools from the Peach Belt Conference on the list. Montevallo was the only east division school from the GSC to make the list.

The two GSC schools on the list were Harding University and Southern Arkansas University while Lander University and University of South Carolina-Aiken from the PBC also made the list.

UM was one of just 14 schools in Division II to be named to the list for the first time.

This award caps off a strong first season for coach O’Brien who led the Falcons to their first postseason since 2003 and led a charge in the classroom that earned the schools first recognition by the AVCA for academic excellence since the award inception back in 1992.
