Three Selected as Recipients of NCAA Degree-Completion Award

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Three University of Montevallo student-athletes have been selected to receive the NCAA Division II Degree-Completion Award. Former women’s soccer standout Paula Radmard along with volleyball standouts Monika Tortorici and Lauren Tortorici will receive the award for the 2009-10 school year.

The NCAA established the Division II Degree-Completion Award Program in 2001.  To date, over $2,000,000 has been given to approximately 600 deserving student-athletes.  Of those student-athletes who have received the award since its inception, 93 percent have earned their undergraduate degree using this program.

The purpose of the Division II Degree-Completion Award program is to provide financial assistance to deserving student-athletes with completion of a first baccalaureate degree. Candidates will be students who have exhausted their athletics eligibility and have received athletics financial aid.

The selection process for the national award emphasizes the academic performance of the student-athlete. Other factors considered are financial circumstances, athletic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities.

Radmard and the Tortorici sisters join a distinguished group of former Montevallo athletes who have received the award including last year’s recipients: Zach Andrews (baseball), Julie Gurak (women’s soccer) and Glenn Murphy (men’s soccer).
