Phi Alpha Theta, Theta Iota Chapter
The History Program at Montevallo offers both a major and a minor in History for students. History majors have several options from which to choose. Students may pursue either a B.A. or B.S. degree. Students also have the option, after obtaining an undergraduate degree in History, to enter the Fifth Year Program in Education, which confers a master's degree.
Students majoring in History must take 36 hours of History courses, including:
HIST 101, 102, 211, 212, 310, and 491;
At least two non-American HIST courses numbered 300 and above;
GEOG 231;
12 credit hours of HIST 300- to 400-level electives.
HIST 101 and 102 are prerequisites for all upper-level History courses, and HIST 211 and/or 212 are prerequisites for many U.S. History electives. See course offerings for topics.
History students may be interested in the Pre-Law Minor.
Graduates form the History Program, having received a quality liberal arts education, are prepared to enjoy successful and gratifying careers in many fields. In fact, no other course of study provides students with the broad base of knowledge so necessary to be competitive in today's global marketplace. Whether your career goals include law, government service, theology, teaching, or business, History is the major for you.

Scholarships available for History majors include:
The Lucille B. Griffith Scholarship which is awarded to enrolled students majoring in History or Political Science, who have exhibited promise in their studies, and have financial need.
The Janet Wilson Reid Scholarship is awarded to enrolled students majoring in History, of at least Junior standing.
The John B. Walters Scholarship is awarded to enrolled students majoring in a social science field (Social Science, Political Science, Sociology, History), of at least sophomore standing, with at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to those preparing for careers in international relations.
Applications are available through the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences. The deadline is February 1 for the fall awards.
UM's Theta Iota Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, International History Honor Society, has been recognized repeatedly as an outstanding chapter by the international organization. In addition to recognizing academic excellence in the field of History, Phi Alpha Theta offers occasions for students and faculty to socialize and share their work and ideas.
The Department in conjunction with the Honors Program provides opportunities for students to participate in the Model United Nations and the Model Arab League. These activities help students to learn about international issues, parliamentary procedures, and debate through the exchange of ideas with students from other universities.
The History Program also offers an Internship in History, for up to six credit hours. See Dr. Ruth Truss for further details.
