The UM chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society, has received international recognition.
The English Department enjoys a rich tradition of study abroad, having traveled to places such as England, Turkey, Italy, and Greece. Future plans include travel to South Africa, France, and the Caribbean. Trips will be offered during both Spring Break and Summer Semester.
In addition to gaining valuable research experience as you work with a faculty mentor, you will be eligible for travel to the annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Recent English Department representatives have presented creative work and research on Shakespeare's plays and on postmodern narrative structures.
As an English major, you may enter writing competitions, some of which award cash prizes. These include the President's Awards for Excellence in Writing, the Carmichael Library Book Review Awards, and the Harbret Writing Center Prose and Poetry Competition.
