NOW AN ALL-STEINWAY SCHOOL!

Thanks to a generous gift from a local corporation we were able to purchase twenty-two Steinway and Boston pianos; support from the university and Montevallo alumni brought the total to twenty-five new pianos. Click here for more details.

The University of Montevallo Department of Music was the first in the State of Alabama to be accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Since that accreditation in 1931, we have remained one of the most highly regarded programs in the state and region. UM is a small school with just over 3,000 students, and an average class size of about 35. The Department of Music has about 85 undergraduate majors and eleven full-time faculty, so we can give more personal attention to YOU!

UM Concert Choir photoIn our small, selective department, you will have plenty of opportunities to perform on and off-campus, whether as a soloist, in a chamber ensemble, in a large ensemble, or as part of the cast or orchestra for an opera or musical theatre production. Our students often take top prizes in prestigious competitions, including National Association of Teachers of Singing, Birmingham Music Club, Alabama Music Teachers' Association and Federation of Music Clubs, just to name a few.

A Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Montevallo will prepare you for the career or graduate school of your dreams. Our Music Education alumni hold teaching positions in public schools across the state and beyond. Our graduates in performance, composition and pedagogy go on to succeed in some of the finest graduate programs in the country.

Study with superior faculty!

Each of our outstanding faculty members has a strong reputation locally, nationally, and in some cases, internationally! Our faculty don't just "teach" - they "do"! They are first-rate performers, conductors, and composers, whose creative output serves to instruct and inspire their students. They are deeply committed to educating young musicians, and they treasure the privilege of practicing and teaching in their field.

Come spend a day with us!

One of the best ways you can get to know a school is by visiting the campus and meeting the faculty. Call the music office at 205-665-6670, or e-mail at music@montevallo.edu, and we will arrange for you to sit in on music classes, ensemble rehearsals, and private lessons. If you would like a sample lesson with a teacher in your major area, that can be arranged as well. If you are unable to visit on a weekday, you and your family may wish to have a private tour of the building on a Saturday. Though you won't be able to sit in on classes, any questions you have about the school and various degree programs can also be answered at that time.

I know that choosing a college is a big decision. I wish you all the best as you make plans to continue your education. We at Montevallo look forward to sharing this process with you!
